Growing up in Orangeburg, South Carolina, much of my childhood was spent just trying to get by. My grandmother picked cotton. My grandfather paved roads. They rose before the sun, two of the millions of American workers doing whatever they could to put food on the table and provide for their families.
Nothing ever came easy. Everyone in my house worked hard, and there was a lot of stress and uncertainty. But through it all, we had hope. That's one of the greatest things about this country: The hope that better days are ahead.
As Democrats, we know that workers and unions have made our country what it is today. That's why President Biden and Vice President Harris's build back better agenda is centered on American workers and their families.
The Biden-Harris administration and Democrats in Congress are as committed as ever to protecting the lives, rights, and livelihoods of workers and families -- because Democrats know that America's workers are the backbone of our economy.
Already this year, Democrats got direct, desperately needed relief for workers and families, increased the Child Tax Credit (which is projected to cut child poverty in half), helped create millions of good-paying jobs, and more. Not to forget, the Biden-Harris administration has also made it crystal clear that the right to organize is a fundamental one that we can never stop fighting for.
On this Labor Day, I am more optimistic than ever for our future -- and I have you to thank for that, Jason. Together, we'll continue fighting for workers and restore hope to our nation.
Thanks for being a part of this, and happy Labor Day.
