Texas Republicans' actions over Memorial Day weekend were nothing more than a shady attempt to suppress voters and voices. It was a threat to our democracy, plain and simple -- and we're grateful that state Democrats were able to stop the bill for now.
My grandmother and I spent the weekend talking about what was going on in Texas -- about the anti-voter bills that are being introduced nationwide and about the attempts to rewrite our nation's history. We've been down this road before, and we cannot afford to go down it again because this bill is so bad, Jason.
It is probably the worst that we've seen nationwide. Not only would it ban mobile voting booths, drive-thru voting, and add restrictions to mail-in voting. It goes as far as empowering partisan poll watchers and banning early voting on Sunday mornings.
It's the most blatant attempt to curb Black and brown people from voting that I have seen in my lifetime. And we have to stand up against it.
The DNC is already hard at work running a 24/7 voter protection program, placing voting and organizing staff in key states, and fighting these bills in court if they become law. But those efforts require your full support.
Please rush a $7 donation to the DNC today to help protect the right to vote and elect Democrats nationwide in the years ahead.
Governor Greg Abbott and his cronies will do everything in their power to get this bill across the finish line, and you better bet Republicans nationwide will be keeping a close eye on Texas to see if they can do the same in their states.
This is one of those break the glass moments, because our democracy lies in the balance, Jason. We must do everything we can to stop this legislation in its tracks, and if it does get passed, we must do everything we can to fight it in the courts. Our democracy depends on it.
So, if you can, I'm asking you to donate $7 to the DNC right now. Whatever you're able to give will support organizing and voter protection staff ready to fight this legislation on the ground, fund round-the-clock voter protection programs, fight anti-voter laws in the courts, and elect Democrats who will fight for the right to vote.
More soon,
Jaime
