Jason, Last night, Democratic Representative Tom Suozzi won resoundingly in the NY-03 special election, and I wanted to take a minute to explain what that victory means as we look ahead to November. Here's the bottom line: Last night's win showed that Democrats remain in a strong position this year, building on wins up and down the ballot in both the 2022 and 2023 elections. Suozzi's victory makes it clear that Democrats are winning on the issues that matter to voters -- from abortion to border security. And, last night's win is even more impressive given the district's Republican lean in the previous midterm cycle, despite an overall strong year for Democrats that defied "red wave" predictions. Since then, Democrats have consistently won in races across the country -- overperforming partisan lean by more than five points in 2023's special elections alone, which is especially notable given that historically, the party in power often has trouble winning off-year elections. The results speak for themselves: Voters are overwhelmingly rejecting MAGA extremism and voting for Democrats -- and this November will be no different. If you're ready to get to work to help elect Democrats up and down the ballot this fall, I hope you'll consider chipping in $7 to help ensure more victories like last night's. And for a limited time only, all grassroots contributions are being triple-matched, up to $60,000. So your contribution today would have 3x the impact! Here are just a few other major Democratic victories over the last year: - In Florida last month, Democrat Tom Keen flipped a Republican-held state House seat by running on protecting abortion access with the overwhelming backing of independent voters. Last year, Democrat Donna Deegan won the Jacksonville mayor's race -- in a city that Ron DeSantis won by 11 points in 2022 -- marking just the second time Democrats have won a mayor's race in the city in the last 30 years.
- In New Hampshire, Democrat Hal Rafter beat Republican Jim Guzofski in September by 12 points in a district that leans six points more Republican than the nation overall. In May, Democrat Marc Plamondon won by 43 points in a district where Democrats had a 23-point edge.
- In Ohio, voters turned out in huge numbers to vote for Issue 1, a state constitutional amendment codifying abortion access -- even as Republican J.D. Vance won the state by six points in 2022.
- In Virginia, Democrats held the Virginia state Senate and flipped the House of Delegates back to Democratic control, despite Governor Glenn Youngkin burning through millions of dollars to ensure a Republican victory. On top of that, Democrat Jennifer McClellan defeated Republican nominee Leon Benjamin in a February special election by nearly 50 points.
- In Wisconsin, Judge Janet Protasiewicz won the Wisconsin Supreme Court race by 11 points, outperforming all statewide Democrats' 2022 margins.
Victories like these show that Americans understand that their rights are on the line under extreme, MAGA-controlled leadership -- and they're voting accordingly. They'll do it again in November. Thank you for being a part of this work, and more soon! Becca Rebecca Santos Seetahal Online Fundraising Director Democratic National Committee |
