As we mark the anniversary of the tragic Parkland shooting, I am reminded of the profound impact that day had on the families and communities affected, and on our nation as a whole.

Jason, As we mark the anniversary of the tragic Parkland shooting, I am reminded of the profound impact that day had on the families and local communities affected, and on our nation as a whole. 17 students and teachers lost their lives, and the emotional scars left are still felt today. For the families who lost loved ones, February 14, 2018 forever divides their lives into a time before and a time after that tragic day. While we can never fully repair the wounds inflicted upon the Parkland families, we can commit ourselves to meaningful action to prevent such senseless tragedies from occurring in the future. For far too long, Congress responded to such heartbreaking events with inaction, but that's changing thanks to the movement we've built together. Much of this change is thanks to the students of Parkland who courageously raised their voices to demand action. Today, the legacy of the horrible loss we suffered is embodied in the millions of people fighting to make school shootings a thing of the past. Since then, we've worked tirelessly to build political and electoral power, electing leaders who prioritize community safety. The historic passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act -- the first piece of federal gun safety legislation in 30 years -- was a testament to the strength of our movement. This legislation not only strengthened our gun laws, but also made significant investments in mental health and initiatives to enhance school and community safety. As we reflect on this solemn anniversary, let us honor the memory of those we lost in Parkland by recognizing the work that still lies ahead. Together, we can and must for a future safe from gun violence, inspired by the collective determination of people like you who are committed to making change.
