At the beginning of last year, I traveled the country with Senator Bernie Sanders. We held rallies in places that many political pundits and analysts said made no sense.
One of our first stops was in Utah, a state that redrew its congressional maps. All the districts there were deep red, but we went and organized anyway. Forget the board, we said. Forget the score. Look at what we can do, right now, today. Let’s have faith and build.
A year later, out of nowhere, a judge struck down Utah’s new congressional maps and ordered them to redraw. All of a sudden, there is a competitive seat in Utah that we stand to gain because the people there were ready. They had faith and built something.
I’ll give you another example. We went to Missoula, Montana — a place where Washington insiders said, “What are you talking to those people for?” We went anyway and brought out thousands of people because we cannot wait for some big opening to happen for us to start doing our work. We have to start now.
One of the young men who was at that rally decided to run for Congress. His name is Sam Forstag, who I am proud to endorse in Montana’s 1st Congressional District. What started as a longshot campaign is now a neck-and-neck race. We are looking at maybe flipping a seat out in Montana because we showed up when the pundits said it did not make sense.
More recently, I visited Florida to endorse Angie Nixon for U.S. Senate. Pundits like to tell us what you can and cannot stand for if you want a chance at winning. But I genuinely believe that we are in a moment of great realignment in our country. A lot of things people said could not happen before can happen now.
When we defy conventional political wisdom and show up for candidates like Angie in Florida, we can win. When we come together and rally around people who are saying yes and building when every single person tells them there is no hope, we can do amazing things. And I really believe that we can win the Senate seat in Florida.
We have to organize with what is in front of us and trust that the next steps will be revealed. We have to work with what we've got and squeeze all of the juice out of that fruit. That is how we will change this country.
