Today as we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I want all of us to really challenge ourselves to reflect on the words of Dr. King and the impact he's had on our society -- and after such reflection, recommit ourselves to fight harder, put in the extra work, and push a little more.
For so many across our country, Dr. King's story and the movement he started have driven us to stand taller, push back harder, and advocate louder for the rights we know we deserve.
Dr. King's words -- words that moved generations to fight for what's right -- share a common thread: Hope amid uncertainty. Despite his intellect, power, and deep knowledge, Dr. King did not always know what lay ahead. And I bet we can all relate to that!
Folks, Dr. King was human -- just like you and me. He acknowledged the worries, anxieties, and difficulties of both ordinary and extraordinary daily life. He addressed his and others' fears about what the upcoming days, months, and years held. But, amidst all of that, he always operated on hope and a dream he had for the future -- a dream for our future.
I hope you'll take the time today to honor the legacy and memory of Dr. King and have hope. Hope for a future that we cannot yet see but that we know we can approach with the same fervent and unapologetic optimism that Dr. King spoke of.
Because when we operate on a vision of hope, we can deliver on the future that we know we want, that we know is possible, that we know we deserve. With hope for a more equal, just, and fair world, we can act to defend voting rights, elect and campaign for leaders who truly care and fight for us, and work to protect the most vulnerable in our society.
Join me in commemorating Dr. King's life, legacy, and vision for the future by honoring his words and building the community and world of which he dreamed today. I look forward to being right by your side in that future.
